How much does a four-tyre job really earn in an auto repair garage? To find out, look beyond the customer’s invoice: include the tyre purchase, valve, balancing weights, eco-contribution and the mechanic’s time. This worked example shows what remains after those direct costs, and why that amount is not the garage’s final profit.
Hypothetical working assumptions: one four-tyre job
The figures below are hypothetical working assumptions for a light vehicle. They are not market averages. All selling prices and costs are in euros and, unless stated otherwise, are € excl. VAT.
| Per tyre: item | Customer charge or purchase cost | Calculation |
|---|---|---|
| Tyre | Purchase: 78.00 € excl. VAT; selling price: 118.00 € excl. VAT | Margin: 40.00 €; margin rate: 51.28%; gross margin rate on sales: 33.90% |
| Valve | Purchase: 3.50 € excl. VAT; selling price: 8.00 € excl. VAT | Margin: 4.50 €; margin rate: 128.57%; gross margin rate on sales: 56.25% |
| Balancing weights | 1.20 € excl. VAT | Consumable, not invoiced separately |
| Tyre eco-contribution | 1.60 € excl. VAT | Re-invoiced to the customer at the same amount |
| Labour | 45 minutes at 62.00 € excl. VAT per hour | 46.50 € excl. VAT invoiced |
| Mechanic’s internal cost | 30.00 € per hour, including gross salary and employer charges | 22.50 € for 45 minutes |
The customer charge per tyre is 118.00 + 8.00 + 1.60 + 46.50 = 174.10 € excl. VAT. Direct costs per tyre total 78.00 + 3.50 + 1.20 + 1.60 + 22.50 = 106.80 €. That leaves a direct-cost margin of 67.30 € per tyre: a margin rate of 63.01% and a gross margin rate on sales of 38.66%.
For all four tyres, the customer pays 696.40 € excl. VAT. Direct costs total 427.20 €, leaving 269.20 € after those costs. This is not the garage’s profit. It still has to cover rent, energy, insurance, tools and administration.

How to account for the tyre eco-contribution without double counting
The example treats the tyre purchase cost and the eco-contribution as separate cost lines. That works only if the contribution is not already included in the supplier’s purchase price. Check the supplier invoice: if the cost is already included, do not add it again to your cost calculation.
The example also re-invoices the contribution at the same amount as the assumed cost. Treat that amount as a pass-through cost, not as extra margin. Your legal responsibility can depend on your role in placing the tyres on the market: the Ministry for the Ecological Transition’s tyre guidance, updated on 20 November 2025 and consulted on 12 October 2026, says the producer, importer or first person to place tyres on the French market pays the contribution. A garage that imports tyres itself can become a producer.
For category A light-vehicle tyres, Aliapur’s official 2026 eco-modulation document, consulted on 12 October 2026, lists a base contribution of 1.60 € excl. VAT. The document also lists 1.76 € excl. VAT with a penalty, 1.44 € excl. VAT with a level 1 bonus and 1.28 € excl. VAT with a level 2 bonus.
If a garage forgets to include the assumed base contribution on the customer invoice, the unbilled cost is 6.40 € excl. VAT per four-tyre job. As a separate hypothetical working assumption, at 40 such jobs per month, that adds up to 256.00 € excl. VAT per month, or 3,072.00 € excl. VAT per year. Check that your invoice treatment matches your supplier paperwork and your own legal position.
Should you invoice valves and balancing weights separately?
The valve has an explicit purchase cost and selling price in this example. You can show it as its own invoice line or include it in a clearly described fitting package. Either way, make sure the customer charge and your internal calculation are consistent.
The balancing weights are different here: they cost 1.20 € excl. VAT per tyre and are not invoiced separately. They are still a direct cost. Include them in the price of the job rather than treating them as free.
What does a 10% tyre discount cost?
A discount on the tyre selling price reduces the margin; it does not reduce the tyre purchase cost or the other job costs. In this hypothetical example, a 10% discount takes the tyre price from 118.00 € excl. VAT to 106.20 € excl. VAT. The tyre margin falls from 40.00 € to 28.20 €, and its margin rate falls from 51.28% to 36.15%.
Across the four-tyre job, the direct-cost margin drops from 269.20 € to 222.00 €: a reduction of 47.20 €, or 17.53% of the initial margin.
Quick tip: After offering a discount, recalculate the margin that remains per job. Then divide the original margin by the reduced margin to estimate how much extra volume you need to recover the difference. Here, 269.20 € ÷ 222.00 € = about 1.21 jobs, that is, about 21% more volume.

What happens if fitting takes longer than planned?
The assumed labour charge is based on 45 minutes per wheel. If each wheel takes 60 minutes instead, labour remains invoiced at 46.50 € excl. VAT per tyre, but the mechanic’s internal cost rises to 30.00 €. The margin per tyre falls from 67.30 € to 59.80 €, reducing the job’s total margin by 30.00 €.
Track actual time as well as billed time. If a job regularly takes longer than the estimate, review the work sequence, the estimate or the price structure instead of letting the extra labour disappear from the calculation.
Eco-modulation: check the actual contribution level
The base amount is not the only figure in Aliapur’s 2026 schedule. The contribution depends on the applicable eco-modulation criteria and supporting documentation. For a hypothetical direct purchase of 100 category A light-vehicle tyres, the listed level 2 amount is 128.00 € excl. VAT in total, calculated as 100 × 1.28 €. At the penalty level, the total is 176.00 € excl. VAT, calculated as 100 × 1.76 €. The difference is 48.00 € excl. VAT.
Confirm the applicable level with the supplier or producer documentation; do not assume a bonus applies without the required evidence.
Used-tyre take-back: include the process in your workflow
Tyre pricing is only part of running a tyre fitting bay. The official business information page on mandatory take-back of certain used products, verified on 18 August 2025 and consulted on 12 October 2026, describes a “one for one” take-back obligation and take-back without a purchase for dedicated sales areas of at least 250 m², subject to the applicable conditions. For tyres, the no-purchase take-back is limited to eight used tyres per year per individual.
The page also states that failing to meet a required take-back or customer-information obligation can result in a fine of 1,500 € for an individual or 7,500 € for a legal entity, doubled for a repeat offence within one year. Check the rules that apply to your premises and sales activity, and make take-back information clear to customers before the sale is completed.

How can an auto repair garage track the price and margin of a tyre fitting?
Keep the quote and job record consistent: tyre cost, valve, balancing weights, eco-contribution, labour billed, actual labour cost and the final customer charge. Review the margin after direct costs, then account separately for overheads. This makes it easier to spot a missing contribution, a discount that is too costly or recurring extra fitting time.

Frequently asked questions
How much does fitting four tyres really earn in an auto repair garage?
Under the hypothetical assumptions in this example, a four-tyre job leaves 269.20 € after direct costs. That is not net profit: the garage still needs to cover overheads such as rent, energy, insurance, tools and administration.
How can an auto repair garage re-invoice the tyre eco-contribution without double counting?
Check whether the contribution is already included in the supplier’s tyre price. In this example, it is treated as a separate cost and re-invoiced to the customer at the same amount. Count it once as a cost and once as a customer charge; do not add it again if the supplier price already includes it.
Should an auto repair garage invoice the valve and balancing weights separately?
The valve can be itemised or included in a fitting package, as long as the charge is clear and reflected in your cost calculation. The balancing weights in this example are a consumable cost included in the job price, not a separate customer line.
What does a 10% tyre discount cost an auto repair garage?
In this hypothetical example, the discount reduces the four-tyre job’s direct-cost margin by 47.20 €, from 269.20 € to 222.00 €. Recovering the original margin requires about 1.21 jobs, or about 21% more volume, at the reduced margin per job.
What happens when tyre fitting takes longer than planned?
When fitting takes 60 minutes per wheel instead of 45, the billed labour charge stays the same in this example, while the mechanic’s internal cost rises. The job margin falls by 30.00 €. Compare actual time with invoiced time to identify where estimates or workflow need attention.
How can an auto repair garage track the price and margin of a tyre fitting?
Record the tyre, valve, balancing weights, eco-contribution, billed labour and actual mechanic cost for each job. Calculate the margin after direct costs, then account for overheads separately. This helps you see whether a quote covers the work performed.
